AMP, an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered sortation solution provider for the waste and recycling industry, has appointed Tim Stuart, former chief operating officer for Republic Services Inc, chief executive officer. Stuart replaces AMP founder Matanya Horowitz, who has transitioned to the role of chief technology officer.

"I founded AMP a decade ago with a vision to change how the world manages its waste, and I'm so proud of what our team has accomplished so far," said Horowitz. "We have category-defining technology that's reshaping waste and recycling. Tim's industry knowledge and experience will amplify our ability to compete as a major player in the industry, and I'm grateful to have him on board to help realize the full potential of what we've started."

A seasoned leader in the waste and recycling industry, Stuart joined AMP's board as the company's first independent director in March 2024. He most recently served as executive vice president and chief operating officer for Republic Services. In that role, Stuart spearheaded the company's adoption, implementation, and scaling of new technologies while overseeing field operations, integrations, digital operations strategy and execution, and more.

Over nearly 18 years at Republic, he rose from area president, region vice president, and vice president roles across the country to executive vice president of operations, culminating in executive vice president and COO in 2019. Prior to Republic, Stuart spent approximately 11 years at Waste Management, Inc.

"The potential of meaningfully lower-cost, higher-performance recycling systems is exciting, and the ability to process municipal solid waste to further reduce environmental impact is significant. I'm impressed with everything Matanya and the AMP team have accomplished, and I'm eager to bring my deep understanding of the market to help deliver on the full potential of this technology," said Stuart. "Matanya's a brilliant technologist, and I look forward to continuing to work with him in his capacity as CTO to make our solutions pervasive with waste companies and municipalities."

In 2024, AMP introduced a first-of-its-kind, AI-powered system to sort municipal solid waste in Portsmouth, Virginia. The company also installed an AMP ONE system to sort single-stream and commercial recycling in Greenville, North Carolina.
