Steel Dynamics accelerates green power usage with EPA recognition
Steel Dynamics ranks among top green power users in the U.S., using enough green power to meet 10 percent of its operations’ electricity needs
Steel Dynamics has joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Green Power Partnership (GPP). Steel Dynamics was recognized by the U.S. EPA, ranking the company 21st among Fortune 500 Green Power Partners and 33rd on the National Top 100 List of largest green power users from the GPP.
"We are proud to be recognized by the U.S. EPA for our use of green power," says Jeff Hansen, vice president of environmental sustainability. "By making the choice to use renewable power in our energy mix, we are reducing our emissions footprint, while also supporting the build-out of the renewable power market and development of those resources."
In 2023, Steel Dynamics' steel mills used 690 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power —enough to meet 10 percent of its steel mill operations' electricity needs, bringing the company closer to its 2025 renewable electricity goal.
In the same year, Steel Dynamics signed the largest renewable product purchase agreement for the steel industry in North America. This agreement covers approximately 15 percent of the company's steel mills' electricity needs.
A new wind energy centre, operational since early 2024, represents a major step toward achieving Steel Dynamics' 2030 target of 30 percent renewable electricity. This project will also contribute significantly to reducing the company's Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions intensity over the long term.
"This list of the largest users of green power across the nation is proof that good business practices can also benefit the environment," says James Critchfield, program director of EPA's Green Power Partnership. "EPA applauds the leading organizations in the Green Power Partnership's Top Partner Rankings for their notable commitment to expanding their use of green power and protecting the environment."
