Recovering and recycling used clothing is essential to combat the environmental impact of the fashion industry, which is responsible for 10 percent of global carbon emissions and produces 92 million tons of waste annually.

Fratelli Esposito, an Italian company which manages and classifies used clothing, has signed an agreement for the installation of an automatic clothing sorting line by composition and colour at its Marcianise plant. With this new installation, PICVISA, a provider of artificial vision technologies for the waste recycling industry, expands its reach in the textile sector, bringing its optical sorting technology to an important market like Italy.

Technology at the forefront of clothing recycling

The Fratelli Esposito plant in Marcianise, which already handles 100 tons of used clothing and footwear daily, is one of the most advanced in the country, equipped with state-of-the-art 4.0 automation systems. At the plant, used clothes are given a new life through a meticulous selection and regeneration process, allowing garments to be ready for reuse and sold in various markets worldwide.

For every kilogram of clothing reused or recycled, up to 3.6 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions are saved, and the demand for water-intensive raw materials like cotton is reduced.

Improving efficiency and accuracy for clothing sorting systems

In the coming months, the plant will be upgraded with the new PICVISA automatic line, designed to classify garments into 24 different categories using a dual conveyor system with the capacity to process up to two tons of clothing per hour. This advancement will significantly improve efficiency and accuracy in sorting clothes by composition and colour and will include an advanced product traceability system, allowing detailed control at every stage of the process.

Through PICVISA technology, Fratelli Esposito aims to strengthen its commitment to innovation and sustainability, ensuring that its operations remain at the forefront in terms of efficiency and environmental responsibility. For PICVISA, this installation represents a significant step in its expansion within the textile sector.
