New PEI scrap metal business to significantly reduce waste going to landfill

John Ross and Sons to acquire new shredder and accessories to separate ferrous metals in cars and other machinery

The new owners of a scrap metal business in Charlottetown will be reducing the amount of waste going into provincial landfill sites, according to the government of PEI.

Clinton Myers and John Ross and Sons recently purchased A&S Scrap Metal and plan to acquire a new shredder and required accessories to separate ferrous metals in cars and other machinery into various components, which when separated will have a much higher value and reduce waste. The remaining components will be baled and re-sold rather than shipped to landfills.

"I commend the new owners for improving the efficiency of their operations and significantly reducing their environmental impact and waste," said Communities, Land and Environment Richard Brown. "We are working closely with businesses across Prince Edward Island to protect and enhance the environment."

The provincial government has approved a loan of $3 million for the purchase of the new equipment.

"It is essential that we support businesses that are using new technologies to reduce their environmental impact and improve their bottom line," Economic Development and Tourism Minister Chris Palmer said. "Our lending portfolios support close to one thousand Island businesses and make a significant contribution to employment and economic growth."

John Ross and Sons is one of the largest scrap metal dealers in Atlantic Canada.
