Republic Services has announced the addition of 14 new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) solid waste and recycling trucks to serve customers throughout the greater Eastside, Puget Sound, Washington. This addition brings the total number of CNG trucks operated by Republic in the greater Puget Sound area to 109. The new CNG trucks replace older diesel-powered trucks, and represent a significant local investment in cleaner, safer and more efficient vehicles.

"The Pacific Northwest is known for its pristine environment and considerable natural beauty, and we believe in doing our part to preserve this for future generations," said Mike Huycke, area president of Republic Services. "We have a long-standing commitment to reducing carbon emissions locally, and our employees are proud to continue to make a difference with our latest CNG fleet deployment."

Republic Services first installed a natural gas fueling station at its Bellevue location in 2010, and recently completed construction to expand CNG truck capacity at the station.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, each new CNG solid waste and recycling truck reduces carbon emissions by as much as 80 percent in comparison with older, diesel-powered trucks. In addition, each new CNG truck deployed is equivalent to removing five passenger vehicles from local roads for one year, or planting 600 mature trees.

Republic Services operates a fleet of more than 2,200 CNG vehicles and 38 natural gas fueling stations nationwide. Approximately 50 percent of all Republic vehicles purchased in 2014 are powered by this domestic fuel source.

Republic Services employs approximately 500 team members in the Puget Sound area, and serves more than 150,000 households and nearly 11,000 commercial customers. It provides service to several municipalities in King County, including the cities of Bellevue, Clyde Hill, Kenmore, Kent, Medina, Mercer Island, North Bend, Lake Forest Park, and Sammamish, as well as unincorporated parts of the County. Republic Services also processes recycled items for the City of Seattle.
