RadComm Systems of Oakville, Ontario recently announced the debut of their MedSpec handheld detector. The MedSpec will allow waste managers, recyclers and transfer stations to quickly identify whether a suspected “hot” load of waste includes medically-sourced radiation. If medical waste is identified, a company can avoid having to spend time and money on a government inspector to survey the suspected load, which can take weeks and cost thousands of dollars.
Operation of the MedSpec is completely automatic. The MedSpec scans suspect material and quickly analyses to determine if and what nuclide is present, then categorizes the result as Medical, Industrial, or Natural Occurring Radioactive Material.
