Toter recently introduced its new 96-gallon “Bear Tight” cart for waste and recyclables. Featuring a strong double-walled lid, bear-resistant latch and rugged construction that can withstand even the strongest and hungriest of bears, the new cart has been tested by The Living With Wildlife Foundation (www.lwwf.org) and received its highest rating of three stars.
“One of the most vexing problems for bear and human interactions relates to waste management,” said Jim Pickett, vice president of municipal sales with Toter. “Our new cart is ideal in areas such as residential neighbourhoods and parks that are experiencing bears foraging through waste containers. Testing has shown that it is virtually impossible for bears to get inside these carts.”
Toter’s signature advanced rotational molding system results in a rugged cart that eliminates potential weak points that could crack under the weight of a 900-pound bear. In addition to a double-walled lid and bear resistant locking mechanism, the new cart features recessed wheels that are attached to the cart with a solid steel axle retained by steel fasteners. Plus, Toter’s Bear Tight Cart is the only bear-resistant cart that is nestable when fully assembled, which the company says saves about $3 (US) on each cart delivery.
“While our primary design objective was to create a bear resistant cart, we were also concerned about the well being of the bears,” Pickett said. “By working with Living with Wildlife, we have also determined that the cart should not pose any risks to bears, other than frustrating their foraging habits.”
Toter also recently introduced a new smaller 21 gallon cart for residential collection. The new 21 gallon cart is designed to provide easier movement and more incentive to recycle, and will accommodate both automated and semi-automated handling. According to Toter, these new models are ideal for pay-as-you-throw garbage programs, single-stream recycling and for segregating food waste organics that can be channelled into composting.
