Elevating-face turners
Vermeer offers two models of elevating face turner technology which uses a combination of paddles and teeth that lift and tumble compost material up the face of the machine and discharge at the rear. The CT670 pull-type compost turner (shown here) can process up to 2,000 cubic yards per hour and handles piles up to 12 feet wide and six feet high in two passes. The self-propelled model CT1010TX compost turner creates a continuous stack configuration by using an optional conveyor, which eliminates the need for open space between windrows, and allows for three to four times more material to be placed in the same space, compared to conventional windrow composters. Powered by a 215-hp (160 kW) Cummins engine, these turners can process up to 4,000 cubic yards (3,058 cubic metres) of compost per hour. (See our article this issue, page 4, detailing the use of the CT1010TX machine at Edmonton’s Composting facility.)
